I'll Tribe until they pry my mouse out of my cold dead hands!

        on tribe, that is.

you know, we've seen people come and go. because they lose interest, life demands too much, or tribe life becomes tribe real life. especially in the bay area, where many members can very easily call each other up and have dinner/hang out, whatever.

a related question is: how many tribes are you in now, and what percentage of that are private tribes?

i ask because i've noticed that about half of mine are love/friend/private tribes, and i know many of you im each other and well... i started thinking about how friendships, for many of us, are getting/have gotten too big for or beyond tribe, in a way. i still like meeting random new people here and there, and i'm occassionally interested in hunting for good discussion forums, but for the most part, i've started settling in with my peeps, you know?

and since tribe is created by the people, i wonder if/when these people (we the oldtimers) will get to a point where we feel like we don't need this medium to discuss and keep in touch, etc.

        am i making sense?

I'm in about 50 still. About 20 are private. Many are dead.

I think even if I only use Tribe to keep up with people I know, which is mostly what I do now, I really like Tribe as the platform on which to do that.

You are indeed making sense, even given your underrested state!

i agree, tribe is a great medium for communicating with friends, whether they're online only or friends in real life. i don't really have any online only friends that i can think of, but i have met a lot of people through tribe. i like the banter this allows during times when we can't be together, and it's also very useful for planning events.

i think i'm in about 100 tribes, but i don't read many of them on a regular basis. probably about 10 of them are private. i recently stumbled across a page that lists all your tribes and posts the total number, but now i can't figure out how to find that page again.

I'm in about 60 tribes, of which I probably check about half on a regular basis.

About 15 of my tribes are private. Most of these have 10 to 20 people in them, but a few have more than 50 members.

I'm still interested in meeting new people, but not randomly in public tribes. I have been burned *SO* many times by jackasses in allegedly "fun" tribes. This is why I like the large private tribes, because I get to meet trusted friends of friends in a safe space.

I do have a few internet-only acquaintances, through tribe and through my Internet radio stream.

One thing I'd like to mention: I'm not happy about the recent trend of people abandoning tribes in favor of blogs. This means you, Abby and Mynx.

Sorry, I'm extra irritable today because people are sawing metal rods right outside my window. And it's raining! Go home, people!

                A. I have a blog, but tribe is my primary outlet for online whatever
                B. I don't know how many tribes I'm in and I'm not counting. Some are private, some aren't.
                C. I've found that Sacto people are fucking high school mentality freaks that I'd rather not associate w/ on any level
                D. Meeting people from tribe can be iffy. However, I've made some fantastic real friends through here.
                E. I'll be here until it's no more.
                F. I'm going to have to check out Yo's ass when I'm in SF.

i just realized that i never answered my own questions. heh.

                > One thing I'd like to mention: I'm not happy about the recent trend of people abandoning tribes in favor of blogs. This means you, Abby and Mynx.

the blahggy thing's an extension to my non-tribe peeps. and like fg mentioned, the format does provide a bit of quiet space. it's like talking to myself in the bathroom mirror for a bit, before heading out to rejoin the party. (and before you ask, yes, i do do that from time to time. =P)

i've no idea how many tribes i'm in, but i think 1/3 to 1/2 of them are moderated or private, in which many of the members overlap. but i've started joining a couple of new ones again, and there's still a bunch that i've got bookmarked.

Tribe is my telephone. I'll stay on it until the next big thing. Which will, then, become my telephone.

      Wed, December 8, 2004 - 4:54 PM
I'm not abandoning tribes for my blog. I just don't have much time at all. Tribing requires following the plot, and I'm not on enough to do that well. Tribe is blocked for me at work. I can't even get on if I want to, and I'm at work a lot. I post a whole lot more on Tribe than I do on my blog, but on my blog, it's all in one place, so maybe it seems more voluminous than it really is.

So is that why you never post on my blog? Trying to train me? Fuck that noise. I'll post where I like.

You're not helping my stressful day today, Yo.

Sorry about the stress level Abby.

The reason I never post on your blog is because it's not on tribe. Not trying to train you, that's too Skinneresque for me. I'm not a manipulator.

I'm with Trouble in that Tribe is incredibly useful to me. I'll likely continue to use it until and probably a bit after it no longer serves its purposes in a practical way.

I also like my blog. It, so far, has remained a laid back and quiet place away from the drama and madding crowds that Tribe is becoming to a greater degree. I think it's a good thing.
  • Re: how much longer

    Wed, December 8, 2004 - 7:33 PM
The points you raise are part of the reason I created this tribe. Tribe started mutating into something else pretty quickly. The pioneer/boomtown period lasted a couple of months. Still, I like Tribe. It's got a way better signal-to-noise ratio than Craig's List and it's not as stagnant as the community where I hang out on peoplesforum.com

I'm very slow to get to know people. I've felt somewhat abnormal because I've gathered that a number of people on Tribe quickly move to IMing and phoning each other and that hasn't happened with me for the most part. Makes me wonder why I don't know how to interact that way. Anyway, my opportunities to meet people through work are next to non-existent. Tribe at least opens the door to meeting more people here in the Bay Area. I've met some folks I really like hanging out with. I just wish the Tribe folk here in the East Bay were as cool and active as the Mission Folks.

As long as I'm still meeting interesting, intelligent and erudite people, as long as the signal-to-noise ratio is tolerable and as long as Tribe.net doesn't completely fuck up their interface, I'll be here. Hell, I should tribe less right now. It is the major timesink in my life. But I'm too addicted. So I don't see that stopping anytime soon.

IMing and phoning isn't all it's cracked up to be. Talk about timesuck! IM is the absolute worst for that.

And as for the phone, well, let's just say that disembodied long distance relationships leave something to be desired.

No, the best method for me is meet people on tribe, then meet them in person right away.
      • Re: how much longer

        Fri, December 10, 2004 - 11:10 AM
That isn't always possible. I don't pick my friends by where they live, I do it by how we get along. I would prefer to get to meet people right away, but I don't have the funds to pick up and fly anywhere in the states. So until I do, I will IM and talk on the phone to the people I care about who live in other states.

So is that why I never talk to you anymore Yo? 'Cause I can't afford to fly to SF? ;)

As for me, I don't care. People can't post pornographic pix anymore? Doesn't bother me in the slightest. And I seriously doubt that anyone will say boo about nude performance art. It's the hardcore / disgusting stuff that is slated for removal.

we're still here because it's been an effective and amusing way to keep in touch with our friends. not much for whether or not we can use this as another platform for "self-expression", etc. etc.

I do care about censorship. I think it's scary. However, tribe is not the only one being effected. This whole thing is a much bigger monster.

If people want to complain to anyone, it should be to the gov't, not the poor folk who are just earning their paychecks at Tribe.

Showing an ass is taboo but violent murders and abuse are perfectly fine for network TV.

Do I care that the entire "mature" category is going away? I do.

I like "smart girls' porn club" and "all things vagina" and lots of the photos in Barbee's tribes and even my dumb tribe that changes names/topics all the time and got marked "mature" because it contained a picture of a blue gummi dildo.

All those things go bye-bye now. Because they're "mature". I never much liked logging onto tribe and seeing some random guy's dick in a profile pic next to my morning coffee (especially knowing that if they'd implemented a version of this new "community flagging" thing say, two YEARS ago I wouldn't be seeing it) but I also liked knowing the mature stuff existed, and knowing that people here weren't so uptight they couldn't be around nudity without having aneurism.

To put it another way: it's one thing to decide not to allow extremely explicit pix because of your interpretation of the current legal climate. It's another to get rid of every single mature tribe. The latter is a business decision, and I don't much like it.

But I'm just back from Honduras (sister wants to move there, and Walter's writing some articles on Roatan) and leaving soon for Vancouver, then Phoenix again (business, life, and family). So I'm glad Tribe's around so I can see what some of my friends are up to.

Excellent points, Liz. Between you, me and the entire Internet, I think the tribe authorities are using the new regulations as a smokescreen to clean up the site. It is unenlightened profit motive in disguise as legal compliance.

But I never had much faith in tribe in the first place anyway, so it's hard for me to get disappointed by this. Tribe is just another dot-com that happened to hit upon a formula that works for us. And of course it will go down sooner or later, the question is whether it's with a bang or a whimper. Meanwhile, I've managed to work it for all it's worth.

Well, I've kinda ignore the censorship debacle of the last couple weeks. Until Walter blogged about the new direction. If anyone is able to call what's going on at Tribe, it'd be Walter. The censorship of "mature" things wasn't cool but what really worries me is the kind of stuff Liz blogged about: signing away the rights to your own content in perpetuity with no ability to terminate that contract.

I'm not leaving Tribe immediately. I'll hang out until it's clear to me there's nothing here for me anymore. But if the people I like and admire leave, there will be little reason for me to stay anyway.

I hang out at www.drivewesaid.com www.buffistas.org (a site that evolved out of Buffy talk on Salon TableTalk) and livejournal.com

I'm a member of MySpace (in order to promote my performance career), okcupid.com, orkut and Friendster but I hardly ever hang there.

      ditto spidra.

i'm in a number of those other networks too, but don't really "hang" anywhere but tribe. if so many of my friends leave tribe, there'll be no reason for me to be here anymore, either. as is, there have been times throughout the year where my main contact with some people were through their blogs or via email. we won't be able to recreate tribe (as we made it/knew it) anywhere else, but it's good to know that at least with some people, we can still keep in touch and further develop our friendships outside of this server space.

I really can't see myself leaving, unless everyone I like goes. I'd have to be a follower with regard to this whole thing, since I have no time to keep up with the current situation.

I like Tribe because people I like are here, and I know how to use it.

Something new would take effort, and I don't have a lot of that to give these days.
